The following are possible causes of Darting or Wandering:
| Air in the system | Oil flow too high |
| Tight tie rod ends and drag link sockets | Excessive wear or damage in steering gear |
| Mechanical bind in steering gear | Steering gear improperly adjusted |
| Steering gear mounting bolts loose on frame | Loose wheel bearings or worn wheel bearings |
| Loose spring pin or shackle bolts | Dry fifth wheel or trailer plate |
| Play in pitman arm |
